Kevin Phipps named as Assistant Football and Track Coach

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College has named former football and track and field standout Kevin Phipps as an assistant coach for football and track and field.

Phipps joins both staffs after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Science from the College last spring and completing a stellar career in each sport.   He will assist with the linebackers in football and serve as the throwers coach for the track and field teams. Phipps replaces Jarrod Davis, who served as the throws coach for the past four seasons.

"It is great having someone like Kevin Phipps stay on campus and ready to contribute to the continued success of our football and track programs," said 10th-year Head Football Coach John Snell, also a graduate of the College. "Kevin has been a very influential part of each program the past four years. He was a great leader and an outstanding member of the B-W family, and we want to keep people like that around as long as possible."

"Jarrod was the best throws coach who I have ever worked with," said 27-year Yellow Jacket Head Track and Cross Country Coach Dr. Bill Taraschke.  "Saying that is something since we had great coaches in the the past such as Loren Crisler and John Shoffstall.  We definitely will miss Jarrod as a friend and colleague."

"We are extremely pleased to welcome Kevin to the program as an assistant coach," continued Taraschke.  "While at B-W, Kevin was an outstanding student-athlete and leader in both football and track."

"Kevin will continue to build on the philopshy and practices that Jarrod established the past four seasons," said Taraschke.  "He has a great rapport with our current student-athletes and coaching staff, and I know our throwers will continue to be OAC and national powers in that area.  He will serve as a full time coach and help Eric (Schmuhl) and I with recruiting."

Phipps ended his illustrious career as a three-year letterwinner in football and four-year lettermen in both indoor and outdoor track and field.

In football, he was a starting defensive tackle, team captain and All-Ohio Athletic Conference player.  In track, he was a team captain, six-time NCAA Division III All-American, six-time OAC champion and seven-time All-OAC Field Athlete of the Week.  He holds school records in the weight throw and shot put in indoors and hammer outdoors.  This spring, Phipps was tabbed as B-Ws Senior Male Outstanding Athlete recipient -- the Kenneth Steingass Award, was awarded the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Great Lakes Region Male Field Athlete of the Year and graduated with a better than 3.0 grade point average.

"I am very pleased to be able to start my coaching career at my alma mater," said Phipps. "I look forward to developing the talent in both programs and hope to make a positive influence on each student-athlete both academically and athletically.  I had an outstanding experience as a student-athlete and I hope to help all my athletes do the same."

"We are very sad to lose Jarrod as a member of the Yellow Jacket track family but we respect his decision and wish him and his family all the best in the next step of their lives," stated Assistant Coach Eric Schumhl, another B-W graduate and former track standout.  "The standards Jarrod set as a person and as a coach are ones we will all work very hard to live up to for years to come."

"Our throwers are, and will continue to be, some of the best in the country and we felt Kevin was an easy choice to succeed Jarrod," said Schmuhl.  "He understands what it takes to elevate your expectations as an athlete and relentlessly pursue them. Kevin has aspiratioins of going beyond anything we've ever envisioned and we are very proud of him for setting his sights high. He pleasantly surprised us as an athlete and we know he will do the same as our new throws coach."
