Four Yellow Jackets Named Academic All-District 7 in Football

BEREA, OHIO -- Four Baldwin Wallace University football student-athletes, senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference linebacker David Flegal (Akron/Revere), senior two-time Academic All-OAC safety Zack Barley (Hudson), junior safety Joe Kasper (Mentor) and senior defensive tackle Addison Carbone (Hudson), have been named as first-team CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 selections and now qualify for the 2013 CAPITAL ONE Academic All-America ballot. Barley is a repeat selection from a year ago.

To qualify for selection, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.3 grade point average, be a starter or key reserve and play in at least 70 percent of his/ her teams games.  All four Yellow Jackets are members of a defense that allows just 16.6 points-per-game.

Flegal, who carries a 3.87 grade point average in BW's 3:2 Master's of Accounting program, currently stands third in the OAC with 89 tackles, including two tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. Last Saturday, in a 31-7 win at Marietta College, he had a career-high 18 tackles. The two-time OAC Defensive Player of the Week, is averaging 11.4 tackles per game. In addition to being a Dean's List student, Flegal is a member of a number of honor societies, the BW Honors Program, BW Accounting Association and both the Investment and Outdoors clubs.

Barley, who also earned first-team Academic All-District 7 honors in 2012, carries a 3.88 grade average in psychology. He has 29 tackles this season, including two tackles for lost yardage, five pass breakups and a forced fumble. Barley has 101 career tackles and five interceptions. The team captain is a Dean's List student, Jacket Scholar, a member of a number of honor societies and involved on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Kasper, who carries a 3.94 grade average in pre-law and political science, is having his finest season as a collegian. In his first season as a starter, he has 50 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, five pass breakups, one recovered fumble that he returned for a 48-yard touchdown and one forced fumble. Kasper is a Dean's List student, a member of a number of honor societies and received the "Highest Greae Point Average" award in 2012.

Carbone, who carries a 3.68 grade point average in finance, is making a remarkable recovery from an injury that sidelined him after the second game of the season in 2012. He has 21 tackles, including three for loss and a quarterback sack. Carbone is a Dean's List student, a Jacket Scholar and a member of a number of honoraries. While injured last season, he became the color analyst for Yellow Jacket football games on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM.

The Yellow Jackets, 6-2 overall, 5-2 in the OAC and listed among the "others receiving votes" in this week's AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) and D3football.com Division III national polls, are back in action this Saturday, November 9 when they travel to Alliance, Ohio to play No.1-ranked the University of Mount Union at 1:30 p.m. BW ends its regular season on Saturday, Nov. 16 when it hosts 8th-ranked Heidelberg University at 1:30 p.m.
